RITA KHACHATURIAN - SERENGETI

Gallery Vanda presents SERENGETI, a new project by Rita Khachaturian, which will be held at Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery from October 18 to November 3.

Rita Khachaturian belongs to the new generation of Georgian artists.
Since graduation from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (2003 – 2007) she actively participates in various exhibitions and projects. Her name has become widely famous over the past few years, both in Georgia and abroad, and her works occupy a special place in private and public collections around the world.

Project 'Serengeti' that includes 37 paintings, is a totally new stage and the result of almost three years of Rita’s work. Project curators are Vanda and Alexander Mujiri.

Serengeti means ‘endless fields’ in the language of the Masai. The Serengeti region that stretches from Tanzania all the way to Kenya hosts an annual migration of around 2 million animals. At the beginning of this great journey, around half a million new lives are born—but by the end, for various reasons, around 250,000 animals will have died.

Like these animals, people also have their own Serengeti—an area of migration with gains and losses, a field of life and death that we visit for a certain amount of time before leaving it behind.

The essence of this natural and uninterrupted process is the period of time that we need to travel from point A to point B, a period that we conditionally call ‘life’.

These works of art depict in a dichotomous manner the themes of coexistence and of the interaction, dialogue and conflict between nature and the human race. Here we see life in its different forms as well as their advantages or weaknesses. We see the coexistence of life forms and their involvement in the processes in which the boundaries between human and animal feelings are erased.

These works also illustrate the collapse of the ecosystem and its inviolable structure; the resources thanks to which life develops as well as the limits of these resources; the harmonic or destructive coexistence between humans and nature.

The Serengeti is a boundless field upon which all actions give rise to a reciprocal feedback.

This series of works follows the maternal line—the Mother as one of the main uniting figures of an evolutionary chain, as a container of new life and a mediator of nature’s secrets.
