In Parjiani's "Gospels", influences from the Middle Ages surface, while at the same time, they bear signs of modern culture. Here the canonical iconography of handwritten religious books and the author's original interpretation coexist. A unique version of the Gospel was created in Soviet Georgia, and to this day has no existing analogue.
Irakli Parjiani (1950-1991) is one of the most renowned figures in 20th century Georgian art. He has been a leader of Georgian painting since the 1980s, having defined the standpoint, style and direction of his generation. Restitution of the lost tradition of religious painting in Georgian art is linked to his name. Providing a liaison between traditional and modern systems of culture, he seemed to possess hidden knowledge about the world.
