#GeorgianHeroes • Giorgi Chubinashvili (1885 - 1973) was a Georgian art historian and the founder of Georgian art studies. Giorgi Chubinashvili was born in St. Petersburg, and studied psychology at the universities of Leipzig and Halle. During 1916-17 he studied Georgian-Armenian-Persian philology at the Petrograd University. His works are chiefly focused on medieval Georgian and Armenian architecture, as well as on wall painting and sculpture. Chubinashvili’s works revealed the historical and artistic value of Georgian art, its national identity. For more than half a century, Giorgi Chubinashvili was an active participant and often the leader of all the activities that were carried out in Georgia in the field of research and protection of monuments of material culture, museums and ancient art exhibitions. He was one of the founding fathers of Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and first rector in 1922–26’s. From 1941 until his death, he directed the Institute of the History of Georgian Arts at the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Currently the National Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation has been named after Giorgi Chubinashvili’s name.
